Description

Type-specific serological marker of contact with herpes simplex virus type 2 (antibodies to the envelope glycoprotein G2) Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a DNA-containing virus from the herpesvirus family, which also includes cytomegalovirus, Varicella-zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus and human herpesviruses type 6, 7 and 8. There are two types of HSV – type 1 and type 2. Infection caused by HSV type 1 and type 2, they are called herpes. Both types of HSV are highly similar in structure, but HSV infection types 1 or 2 are characterized by certain features. HSV-1 usually affects the upper half of the trunk (mucous membranes of the mouth, mucous-skin connections of the face, eyes), HSV-2 mostly affects the lower half of the trunk – genitals, anal area, buttocks, thighs. HSV type 1 infection usually occurs through contact with the patient's saliva, and HSV type 2 usually occurs sexually. But each virus can potentially infect both one and both of these areas of the body. Herpes is one of the most common human infections (65-90% of the population), of the two types of HSV, HSV type 1 is more common. After the patient recovers from the primary infection, the virus is not completely removed from the body, but remains in a latent (dormant) state in the neurons of the trigeminal or sacral ganglia. From time to time, the virus reactivates and causes relapses of infection. Clinical manifestations are more pronounced in primary infection than in relapses. The activity of clinical manifestations is directly related to the state of the immune system. Primary HSV-1 infection is usually noted during childhood, HSV-2 in adolescents and adults. Due to the similarity of the two types of HSV, the presence of antibodies to herpes simplex virus type 1 reduces the risk of infection with herpes simplex virus type 2 by 50%, and those infected with primary genital herpes are easier than those who do not have antibodies to herpes virus type 1. Genital herpes (genital herpes) in a pregnant woman, it is dangerous to transmit the infection to the child. It is estimated that about 75% of primary genital herpes and 98% of relapses are caused by HSV type 2, the rest by HSV type 1 (the ratio varies depending on the region and population).
