Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), or human herpes virus type 4 is the cause of infectious mononucleosis. The etiology of some oncological, mainly lymphoproliferative, diseases is also associated with this virus. There is evidence that EBV may be the cause of the so-called "chronic fatigue syndrome". The detection of Epstein-Barr virus DNA in blood and/or saliva by PCR can serve as confirmation of the course of the acute stages of infection. Virus DNA detection is especially useful for detecting this infection in newborns when serological studies are not informative due to the immaturity of the immune system, as well as in complex and questionable cases. Quantitative determination of Epstein-Barr virus DNA in blood serum makes it possible to distinguish the carrier (low concentration of the virus) from manifestations of the infectious process with active reproduction of EBV. Determining the concentration of the virus in the blood serum is important for establishing the activity of the process and evaluating the effectiveness of therapy. Analytical indicators: the fragment being determined is a specific section of the DNA of the Epstein-Barr virus; the specificity of the determination is 100%; the sensitivity of the determination is 400 IU/ml.
