Medical information

Important preparation, use and interpretation guidance.

Description

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbosacral spine is a non-invasive diagnostic method that allows you to obtain detailed images of the spine in the lumbosacral region. Using a powerful magnetic field and radio waves, MRI visualizes discs, vertebrae, joints, nerves and surrounding soft tissues. This makes it possible to diagnose various conditions, including herniated discs, spinal canal stenosis, inflammatory processes and neoplasms. The study is conducted for adults and children from the age of 14.

When it is used

pain in the lumbosacral region, especially if it radiates into the leg or is accompanied by numbness, tingling or weakness in the extremities; suspected herniated disc or spinal canal stenosis; assessment of structural abnormalities of the spine, degenerative changes or diseases such as osteochondrosis; diagnosis of inflammatory processes and neoplasms in the lumbosacral region; spinal injuries; preparation for spinal surgery or evaluation of its results.

Important cautions

within 4 months after the installation of shunts and stents in blood vessels (regardless of location: head, arm, leg, etc.), cava filters and most of the artificial heart valves; pregnancy (up to 15 weeks) if the risk exceeds the benefit; the presence of a metallic foreign body of the eye; the presence of metal shrapnel, bullets in the body; an electric, magnetic, or mechanical activated implant (for example, a pacemaker, an insulin pump biostimulator, a neurostimulator, a cochlear implant, hearing aids); other implants responsible for life support; intracranial (intracranial) aneurysmal clips (except titanium); the presence of ferromagnetic surgical clamps or staples, metal plates. The presence of implants inside the body may be a contraindication to MRI. It is necessary to have an implant passport or permission from the attending physician for magnetic resonance imaging.
